“Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last” soars as Sunbury Press bestseller for March

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Sunbury Press has released the bestsellers list for March, 2016. Mike Campbell’s 2nd edition of his Amelia Earhart book took the top spot. Dead of Summer by Sherry Knowlton grabbed the second spot.

Sherry Knowlton nabbed the next two spots with “Dead of Summer” at #2 and “Dead of Autumn” at #3 thanks to author activities. M A Richards’ “Choice of Enemies” climber to #4 due to book store events. About the Author:

Mike Campbell spent nine years as an active-duty Navy print and broadcast journalist and 21 years as a Navy civilian writer and Air Force public affairs officer, retiring from federal service in 2008. Originally from College Park, Maryland, he is a 1974 graduate of the University of Maryland.

After meeting Thomas E. Devine, author of EYEWITNESS:  The Amelia Earhart Incident in 1988, Campbell became convinced that Devine, Fred Goerner, Paul Briand Jr., and other Earhart researchers were correct when they proclaimed the presence and death of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan on Saipan after their disappearance in July 1937. A point of light emerges

The few Earhart enthusiasts who regularly read my blog (Earhart Truth) are aware that the second of the two major storylines that describe Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last, the near-complete media blackout of the book, has greatly overshadowed its most important aspect – its presentation of the most comprehensive and compelling case ever for the presence and deaths of Amelia and Fred Noonan on Saipan.

I won’t go into details about all the radio hosts, newspaper people and bloggers who’ve pledged to help, only to back off and ignore me after they learn the unpleasant truth about the wretched ends of our two heroes almost 77 years ago. The ugly truth in the Earhart case simply doesn’t fit into the rose-colored worldview of most of our media types. It’s not PC and “it’s not artistic,” as Rosie Perez told Billy Hoyle, Woody Harrelson’s character in White Men Can’t Jump, as they argued about winning versus losing on a bus ride in South Central Los Angeles. And, for most of the rest, it’s just not important anymore, what happened to a pair of Americans who landed in the wrong place the Pacific in 1937 and paid for it with their lives. Now, of course, we have the continuing cover-up and mystification of the truth, which long ago became an accepted piece of our cultural furniture that none but a scant few even questions anymore.  And don’t forget, the wonderful Japanese people have been our best friends in the region since 1945, and we don’t want to re-open old wounds or embarrass our friends, would we?

At the risk of being accused of extreme redundancy and even sour grapes, I must say it again: The establishment’s aversion to the truth in the Earhart case is very real, and it has been  trending even worse than normal until only recently, when a distant point of light emerged from the most unexpected place I could have imagined.

In mid-December, Larry Knorr, Sunbury Press publisher, advised me that he had received a phone call from Kay Alley, vice chair of the Kansas Chapter of the Ninety- Nines, the international organization of licensed women pilots, with members from 35 countries and over 5,500 members worldwide. Ms. Alley asked Larry if she thought I might be interested in speaking at the Ninety-Nines South Central Section Fall Meeting, to be held in Wichita, Kansas, the last weekend of September, 2014. Is the Pope a Catholic? I’ve talked to Kay a few times already, thanked her profusely for this golden opportunity, and we’re on track for the last weekend in September. Kay also says that two other aviation groups that are having conferences at the same time in Wichita have expressed their interest in having me speak to them, so this could be even bigger than we initially envisioned.

Here’s more about the remarkable organization that is the Ninety- Nines, who elected  Amelia Earhart as their first president, taken directly from the Kansas Chapter’s website:

The organization came into being November 2, 1929, at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New York. All 117 American female pilots had been invited to assemble for mutual support and the advancement of aviation. Louise Thaden was elected secretary and worked tirelessly to keep the group together as we struggled to organize and grow until 1931, when Amelia Earhart was elected as first president and the group was named for the 99 charter members.

Today Ninety-Nines are professional pilots for airlines, industry and government; we are pilots who teach and pilots who fly for pleasure; we are pilots who are technicians and mechanics. But first and foremost, we are women who love to fly!

Our Headquarters, located at the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is home to our large archival records, video oral histories, personal artifacts, collections and memorabilia, and biographical files on thousands of women pilots from around the world. This is also the site of our 99s Museum of Women Pilots.

To say this elite group of women pilots is pure “establishment” would be an abject understatement.  The Ninety-Nines are universally respected as the ultimate group of professional female aviators – “aviatrixes” in the old parlance. For them to recognize the existence ofTruth at Last at all is more than any establishment organization, outside of a few chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a Kiwanis group and some senior assisted living facilities in Jacksonville have done so far. But the Ninety-Nines carry serious weight, and others who have previously looked askance at this book may reconsider after the September event. This presupposes that my presentation will be good, and so I’ll do all I can to be as ready and professional as I can. I’ve already begun to assemble a comprehensive power point presentation that will tell the Truth at Last story in 90 minutes, and there’s plenty of time to polish it.

Finally we’re going to get a real break, an opportunity to make friends and influence people, all because just one woman likes my book, recognizes the truth and is in a place where she can make a difference. That’s all it takes, so basically it’s in God’s hands. Perhaps the most amazing irony of all –it’s almost impossible for me to label this a coincidence – is that the Kansas Chapter of the Ninety Nines is, of course, the chapter of Amelia’s state of birth.

A few others who want to help this cause are also beginning to emerge. David C. Henley, the publisher emeritus of the Lahontan Valley(Nevada) News, has promised to do a story for the Carson City newspaper, the Nevada Appeal, after he takes some photos of the old Garapan jail on Saipan during a forthcoming visit to the scene of the crime, and I’ll be on Truth Frequency Radio this Sunday, March 9 at 5 p.m., EDT.  A few other things are in the works, but it’s too early to announce anything.

So please stay tuned. As I’ve told Larry Knorr several times, “This book has not yet begun to fight!” Nor have I.

Longing for Spring, anyone? Baseball novel takes top spot on Sunbury bestseller list in January

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The Closer, Alan Mindell’s heart-warming baseball novel, ranked #1 due to author activities in California. Mike Campbell’s Amelia Earhart – The Truth At Last moved up on the list, taking #2, thanks to bookstore and library sales.

Sunbury Press posted its worst month in two years in January due to the frigid weather, the owners’ vacation to sunny Puerto Rico and focus on the opening of the Sunbury Press bookstore in Mechanicsburg. Additionally, the company did not release any new titles until very late in the month. Sales were down across the publishing industry due to record cold temperatures keeping patrons from bookstores in the midwest and northeast,

Dennis Herrick’s Winter of the Metal People, about the Tiguex War in New Mexico between the Spanish conqustadors and Pueblo Indians, jumped to #3 on the list, due to sales in the southwestern US.

Judi Markowitz’s The View from Four Foot Two, a medical memoir about her daughter, held strong at #4, thanks to media attention.

Dr. Brandon Musgrave’s medical school memoir, Hour 30, returned to the list at #5, thanks to ebook sales.

Steve Kious’s steam punk novel, Sherlock Holmes and the Crater Lake Adventure, debuted at #6, thanks to numerous reviews and a strong ebook promotion..

Barbara Matthews and Barbara Trainin Blank took the 7th spot with their self-help book What to Do About Mama?, a guide to caring for aging family members, thanks to author activities.

Stink Bomb, Ricky Bruce’s children’s book about life among the arthropods on the river bank, grabbed the 8th position thanks to author activities.

Tony Julian’s Pit Bulls, containing vintage photographs of pit bulls, remained in the rankings, taking #9 on the list, due to sales to dog enthusiasts.

Jim Dohren’s Letters from a Shoebox, sharing the civil war letters of several Indiana and Ohio soldiers, rounded out the list at #10 thanks to author activities.

Mike Campbell is the Sunbury Press Author of the Year for 2013 — Other “Sunnies” winners announced

Mechanicsburg, PA — Mike Campbell’s thoroughly researched solution to the Amelia Earhart mystery, Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last, was the top selling book for Sunbury Press in 2013, taking Sunny awards for overall sales and for the nonfiction category. “Monarchs” rule the July bestseller list at Sunbury Press

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — “Raising Monarchs,” Sue Fox McGovern’s book about raising butterflies in the backyard,  was #1 thanks to author events in Illinois.  Dennis Herrick’s “Winter of the Metal People,” a historical novel about the Tiguex War in New Mexico ranked #2 due to author events in that state.

Sunbury’s sales for July 2013 were up 19% over July 2012, making it the best July ever for the company.  Year to date, sales are up 32% over last year.  EBook sales continued to be flat while print sales were up. “The eBook trend continues,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “The Nook platform is down 54% this month as compared to last year. Kindle is also down a bit.  Our sales increase is primarily due to direct sales from our eCommerce site.”

Dr. Nirmal Joshi’s newly released “Five Drops of Estrogen,” a memoir about the female influences in his life, grabbed the 3rd spot thanks to author activity

“The Closer,” Alan Mindell’s baseball novel, took the 4th spot thanks to online sales.

John Cressler’s “Emeralds of the Alhambra,” last month’s #1, slipped to 5th, but continues to sell steadily.

Markus Roberts’ “More Bread Please” ranked 6th due to author events.

The Joe’s — Farrell and Farley — took the 7th spot with “Keystone Tombstones Civil War” thanks to interest in the Gettysburg 150th anniversary.

David Parmalee’s “The Sea is a Thief” slotted at #8 thanks to summer sales along the Virginia coast.

Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart – The Truth At Last” moved up a notch, taking #9 on the list, thanks to continued steady sales.

Medium Michele Livingston’s “Messages from Beyond” tops Sunbury Press’s May bestseller list

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — “Messages from Beyond”, Michele Livingston’s spiritual guidebook relating the popular medium’s views on metaphysical topics,  was #1 thanks to author events and activities. John Cressler’s “Emeralds of the Alhambra,” a soon-to-be-released historical romance based in medieval Spain ranked #2 due to pre-sales.

Sunbury’s sales for May 2013 were up 28% over May 2012, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “Our strong start continues,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 49% year-to-date compared to last year. We’ve just returned from BEA with even more ideas on how to grow the top and bottom lines and increase opportunities for our authors.”

The just-released special Civil War edition of the “Keystone Tombstones” series by Joe Farrell and Joe Farley (with Lawrence Knorr) debuted at #3 thanks to author events and local interest.

Anthony Julian’s “Pit Bulls,” containing historic photographs of the pets with their families, continues to sell briskly, ranking #5.

Charles “Ken” Godfrey’s “The Final Charge,” a revisionist history fantasy about the Battle of Gettysburg and Pickett’s Charge, returned to the charts thanks to the pending 150th anniversary of the battle.

Doug Brode’s “Patsy!”. about Lee Harvey Oswald’s involvement, or lack thereof, in the Kennedy assassination, continued to sell well thanks to a national advertising campaign.

Doug Gibboney’s just released “More Scandals of the Civil War” debuted at #8 thanks to author activities.

Shelly Frome’s novel “Tinseltown Riff” grabbed a spot on the chart thanks to upcoming author events in Connecticut.

Bob Ford’s “Beagle Tales 3” rounded out the list thanks to author events.

Doug Brode’s Kennedy assassination novel “Patsy!” goes national – Sunbury’s April bestsellers

Mechanicsburg, PA – “Patsy!”, Doug Brode’s nonfiction novel relating Lee Harvey Oswald’s perspective on the Kennedy assassination,  was #1 upon release thanks to media attention, including the Dennis Miller show. Anthony Julian’s “Pit Bulls,” a collection of vintage photos of these pets and their families ranked #2 due to heavy interest from dog shelters and dog rescue supporters.

Sunbury Press experienced its best April ever. In fact, it was the company’s best month since December 2011 and the best non-holiday month in its history!  Sales for April 2013 were up 92% over April 2012, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “We’re moving at a good clip heading into BEA,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 52% year-to-date. We continue to expand our distribution channels and grow our direct-to-consumer and direct-to-store sales.”

The late Linnea Jepson’s “Linnea’s Kitchen: Yummy Ayurvedic Recipes and Life Lessons” has been selling briskly since the author’s unexpected passing. A second print run is being contemplated by her heirs.

“Emeralds of the Alhambra,” John Cressler’s soon-to-be released historical novel about religious harmony in medieval Spain has been bolstered by advance sales.

Susan Emmi’s newly released “As a Guest of Clive Barnes – Journeys through the Ballet with Clive Barnes and Others,” grabbed the 5 spot due to author activities in New York City.

Jess Steven Hughes’ novel “The Sign of the Eagle,” set in ancient Rome, was #6 in sales thanks to author activities.

“The 3-5-7 Model,” Darla Henry and Associates’ program to counsel grieving children, took the 7 spot thanks to author events.

“In the Shadow of a Mountain,” Susan Dahlgren Daigneault’s memoir about her famous father, WW2 hero Ed Dahlgren, “The Sergeant York of Maine,” stayed on the chart at #8 thanks to author appearances.

John Scanlan’s “Of Guilt and Innocence” again tops Sunbury Press’s list — March bestsellers

Mechanicsburg, PA – “Of Guilt and Innocence”, John Scanlan’s debut police-procedural mystery,  was #1 in print for the second consecutive month thanks to brisk eBook sales. Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart – the Truth at Last,” about the disappearance of the famed aviatrix, ranked 2nd due to strong sales in all formats.

Of Guilt and Innocence

Sunbury Press experienced its best March yet, and its best first quarter ever. In fact, it was the company’s strongest non-holiday quarter in its history!  Sales for March 2013 were up 29% over the prior year, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “Our strong start continues,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 40% year-to-date. EBook sales are nearly double last year, and 8x 2011 during the same quarter. Our best-seller sold more units as an eBook for the second straight month.”

Joanne Risso’s children’s book “In the Field,” about a little boy communing with nature, ranked 3rd thanks to author events. Her book “Over the Sea,” about the mysteries of water, also made the chart at #8.

“Hour 30,” Dr. Brandon Musgrave’s testimonial about life in medical school continued to sell well, rising to #4.

“Rock-a-billy Rebel” headlines Sunbury Press’s best January ever… Sunbury’s January best-sellers

Mechanicsburg, PA – “Rockabilly Rebel: Known and Unknown Stars I’ve Known”, Mack Allen Smith’s recollection of the numerous musical talents he interacted with during his Rock-a-Billy Hall-of-Fame career,  was #1 in print thanks to regional bookstore sales. Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last” led all eBooks and was 7th in print thanks to those seeking the truth about Amelia’s disappearance. Farrell & Farley’s “Keystone Tombstones Volumes 2 & 1” were #2 & #3 in print, respectively,  due to several television appearances by the authors.  Dr. Brandon Musgrave’s medical school expose “Hour 30” ranked #2 in eBooks, thanks to a author promotions. “Of Guilt and Innocence,” John Scanlan’s debut police-procedural mystery, was #3 in eBooks and 4th in print due to heavy regional media coverage. Daniel Diehl’s “Revelations: Book One of the Merlin Chronicles” was #4 in eBooks thanks to the efforts of Daniel’s publicist.

Sunbury Press experienced its best January yet, after seeing sales decline slightly in 2012 versus 2011, as eBooks cannibalized print.  Sales for January 2013 were up 21% over the prior year, with growth in print leading growth in eBooks for the first time in years. “We have seen an increase in print sales to independent bookstores,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “We’ve had a lot of regional interest in many of our titles, and the media seems to be more open to reporting on smaller presses. Conversely, from our perspective, it appears eBook sales are beginning to level.  Regardless of which way the market goes from here, we are ready.”

Darla Henry’s “The 3-5-7 Model – A Practice Approach to Permanency,” detailing her system for dealing with grief, nabbed #5 in print due to wholesale orders to conferences.

Carol Schultz Vento’s “The Hidden Legacy of World War II,” revealing the affect of PTSD on her famous father, Arthur Dutch Schultz and their family, ranked 5th in eBooks due to continued media interest in the book.

Joseph Carvalko’s “The Techno-Hum​an Shell: A Jump in the Evolutionary Gap,” detailing the merging of technology and anatomy, debuted at 6th in print and 7th in eBooks thanks to author events.

Robert Broomall’s “Murder in the 7th Cavalary,” a mystery based in General Custer’s camp, continued to sell well in eBook format, ranking 6th.

Sue Dahlgren Daigneault’s biography about her famous father, WW2 hero Ed Dahlgren, grabbed 8th in print and 9th in eBooks thanks to author events.

‘The People’s Medium,’ Michele Livingston, rejoined to the top 10 eBooks, slotting in at #8 thanks to author events.

Ann Elia Stewart’s “Twice a Child,” a novel recounting her father’s Lewy Body Dimentia, ranked 9th in print.

Bob Ford’s “Beagle Tales,” the first volume in his popular series, finished the eBook top 10, thanks to author appearances.

“There is Something About Rough & Ready: A History of the Village at the Heart of the Mahantongo Valley” rounded out the print top 10, as regional sales continued to be brisk.
