MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Sunbury Press has released the bestsellers list for July, 2014. Keith Rommel’s novel The Cursed Man led the way.

About The Cursed Man

The Cursed Man, by Keith Rommel, tells the story of Alister Kunkle, a patient at Sunnyside Capable Care Mental Institution. Alister has been in seclusion for the last 25 years, having no contact with the staff or the outside world. The reason for this is that anyone who communicates with Alister dies within the day, for he is the Cursed Man and Death takes a professional interest in those unlucky enough to cross his path.

Believing him simply deranged, Dr Anna Lee, an up-and-coming young psychiatrist, has come to cure Alister. She is warned about Alister’s past and is shown evidence of previous encounters made by the skeptical or unbelieving, all of whom died, sometimes horribly. Regardless of the stories, Anna will not be dissuaded and is reluctantly allowed access to Alister. All assume her fate is sealed, but when she returns unharmed the next day, we also start to wonder about the stories.

So begins an enthralling narrative told in the past and the present as Anna attempts to learn why Alister believes he is cursed, while at the same time trying to convince him the events were not real and that in fact he is merely ill and so can be cured. Is Alister truly followed by death or is he simply mentally ill? The Cursed Man is an extremely well-written suspense horror story… I enjoyed it immensely; right up until the very end I was never sure of the outcome… Great story-telling in the tradition of Stephen King… — Booklore

Ebooks continued their decline from their peak in 2012, dropping 20% in July, as compared to last July. Trade paperbacks continue to be the most popular format. The company is preparing for the 10th anniverary celebration at the Sunbury Press store at 50 West Main Street in Mechanicsburg on Friday September 5th. Keith Rommel, the author of The Cursed Man and the lead actor who plays the cursed man in the movie, Brahm Gallagher, will be on hand to sign books and to read. The festivities run from 6 to 9 followed by an after party at The Metropolis Collective at 17 West Main.  All are invited!

Keith Rommel’s The Cursed Man, The Lurking Man & recently released The Sinful Man were helped by orders from Barnes & Noble, strong sales at Rocky’s Hardware and interest in The Cursed Manmovie. John Scanlan’s Of Guilt and Innocence and Victims of Circumstance both charted thanks to strong sales in Florida. Alan Mindell’s The Closer stayed on the chart thanks to sales to San Diego area bookstores. Mike Campbell’s Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last climbed to #6 on the winds of interest in the anniversary of the loss of the aviatrix. Marie Sontag’s The Bronze Dagger grabbed #7 thanks to author events. The Undecided by Robin Donaruma placed 8th due to book store orders. Steve Troutman’s The Trevorton, Mahanoy and Susquehanna Railroad charted thanks to regional interest. Joe Fair’s Call Sign Dracula was #6 thanks to author activity at military unit reunions. Karim El Koussa’s Jesus the Phoenician returned to thst charts thanks to interest in Europe. Dan Shutter’sThe Mouse with the Broken Tail was 13th thanks to author activities. Anthony Julian’s Pit Bulls Icontinued to draw interest among dog enthusiasts. A Darker Shade of Freedom by C James Gilbert was bolstered by author activities in the Gettysburg area and a TV appearance in Harrisburg. Brandon Musgrave’s Hour 30 was the 2nd ranked ebook, taking #16 overall. Paul Argentini’s The Spirits’ Cabin of Lake Eagle Talon debuted at #17 thanks to author activities. Tim Dempsey’s Well I’ll Be Hangedwas helped by bookstore purchases. Robin Lee’s Sanctuary Dishonored rounded out the list again.

20 year-old murder case subject of Palm Beach County mystery novel by John Scanlan

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Sunbury Press has released John Scanlan’s second novel “Victims of Circumstance.” set in Florida’s Palm Beach County.

About the Book:

For twenty years he knew the man who murdered his wife.  He knew he was where he belonged: in a jail cell, never again to see the light of day as a free man.  It didn’t help Chris Redgrave move on, but it was enough.  Then the new city-slicker State Attorney of Palm Beach County came to pay him a visit.  He told Chris of advances in DNA testing.  He told him of recanted witness statements and a racist, good ol’ boy culture that mistook an innocent man for a guilty one.  And he told him of Julian Anderson’s release from prison.

As his closure unravels and memories of his wife’s brutal death haunt him once again, Chris wages war with himself over if he can accept that his wife’s true killer has lived free for the past two decades.  But when the new investigation into his wife’s murder unearths clues that indicate Anderson may be guilty after all, Chris is convinced he had it right all along.  Knowing that the politically motivated State Attorney will never admit he made a mistake, Chris is forced to examine just how far he will go to achieve justice.

About the Author:

John Scanlan is a police officer on the picturesque island of Palm Beach in South Eastern Florida. After moving south from the small, western New York village of Le Roy in 2005, he subsequently fell in love with South Florida’s tropical beauty and laid back lifestyle, which is the backdrop for his first novel, Of Guilt and Innocence, and this novel.

A graduate of Brockport College, John’s previous endeavors include training with the United States Border Patrol in Charleston, South Carolina and working as a legal aid for the former Immigration and Naturalization Service in Buffalo, New York. He currently resides in Martin County, Florida with his wife, two daughters, and son.

Doug Brode’s Kennedy assassination novel “Patsy!” goes national – Sunbury’s April bestsellers

Mechanicsburg, PA – “Patsy!”, Doug Brode’s nonfiction novel relating Lee Harvey Oswald’s perspective on the Kennedy assassination,  was #1 upon release thanks to media attention, including the Dennis Miller show. Anthony Julian’s “Pit Bulls,” a collection of vintage photos of these pets and their families ranked #2 due to heavy interest from dog shelters and dog rescue supporters.

Sunbury Press experienced its best April ever. In fact, it was the company’s best month since December 2011 and the best non-holiday month in its history!  Sales for April 2013 were up 92% over April 2012, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “We’re moving at a good clip heading into BEA,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 52% year-to-date. We continue to expand our distribution channels and grow our direct-to-consumer and direct-to-store sales.”

The late Linnea Jepson’s “Linnea’s Kitchen: Yummy Ayurvedic Recipes and Life Lessons” has been selling briskly since the author’s unexpected passing. A second print run is being contemplated by her heirs.

“Emeralds of the Alhambra,” John Cressler’s soon-to-be released historical novel about religious harmony in medieval Spain has been bolstered by advance sales.

Susan Emmi’s newly released “As a Guest of Clive Barnes – Journeys through the Ballet with Clive Barnes and Others,” grabbed the 5 spot due to author activities in New York City.

Jess Steven Hughes’ novel “The Sign of the Eagle,” set in ancient Rome, was #6 in sales thanks to author activities.

“The 3-5-7 Model,” Darla Henry and Associates’ program to counsel grieving children, took the 7 spot thanks to author events.

“In the Shadow of a Mountain,” Susan Dahlgren Daigneault’s memoir about her famous father, WW2 hero Ed Dahlgren, “The Sergeant York of Maine,” stayed on the chart at #8 thanks to author appearances.

Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart – The Truth At Last” continues to sell well, taking #9 on the list.

Steve Troutman’s “Tulpehocken Trail Traces,” detailing the remnants of the old Indian path from Shamokin to Conrad Weiser’s homestead returned to the chart thanks to author appearances.

John Scanlan’s “Of Guilt and Innocence” again tops Sunbury Press’s list — March bestsellers

Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart – the Truth at Last,” about the disappearance of the famed aviatrix, ranked 2nd due to strong sales in all formats.

Of Guilt and Innocence

Sunbury Press experienced its best March yet, and its best first quarter ever. In fact, it was the company’s strongest non-holiday quarter in its history!  Sales for March 2013 were up 29% over the prior year, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “Our strong start continues,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 40% year-to-date. EBook sales are nearly double last year, and 8x 2011 during the same quarter. Our best-seller sold more units as an eBook for the second straight month.”

Joanne Risso’s children’s book “In the Field,” about a little boy communing with nature, ranked 3rd thanks to author events. Her book “Over the Sea,” about the mysteries of water, also made the chart at #8.

“Hour 30,” Dr. Brandon Musgrave’s testimonial about life in medical school continued to sell well, rising to #4.

John Scanlan’s “Of Guilt and Innocence” tops Sunbury Press’s February best-sellers

Carol Schultz Vento’s “The Hidden Legacy of World War II,” revealing the affect of PTSD on her famous father, Arthur Dutch Schultz and their family, ranked 2nd due to continued media interest in the book.

Of Guilt and Innocence

Sunbury Press experienced its best February yet, after seeing sales decline slightly in 2012 versus 2011, as eBooks cannibalized print.  Sales for February 2013 were up 59% over the prior year, with growth in eBooks outpacing growth in print. “We are off to a fantastic start this year,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “Sales are up 54% year-to-date. EBook sales are nearly double last year, and 9x 2011 during the same period. Our best-seller sold more units as an eBook for the first time.”

Sunbury has decided to stop reporting separate rankings for print and eBooks, instead combining the unit totals.

“There is Something About Rough & Ready: A History of the Village at the Heart of the Mahantongo Valley” ranked #3, as regional sales continued to be brisk.

“Rockabilly Rebel: Known and Unknown Stars I’ve Known”, Mack Allen Smith’s recollection of the numerous musical talents he interacted with during his Rock-a-Billy Hall-of-Fame career,  was #4 thanks to regional bookstore sales.

Lane Heymont’s debut novel “The Freedman and the Pharaoh’s Staff” jumped to #5 out of the gate thanks to a steady stream of author appearances and media coverage.

Jess Steven Hughes’ novel “The Sign of the Eagle,” set in ancient Rome, was #6 in unit sales.

“Rock-a-billy Rebel” headlines Sunbury Press’s best January ever… Sunbury’s January best-sellers

Mike Campbell’s “Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last” led all eBooks and was 7th in print thanks to those seeking the truth about Amelia’s disappearance. Farrell & Farley’s “Keystone Tombstones Volumes 2 & 1” were #2 & #3 in print, respectively,  due to several television appearances by the authors.  Dr. Brandon Musgrave’s medical school expose “Hour 30” ranked #2 in eBooks, thanks to a author promotions. “Of Guilt and Innocence,” John Scanlan’s debut police-procedural mystery, was #3 in eBooks and 4th in print due to heavy regional media coverage. Daniel Diehl’s “Revelations: Book One of the Merlin Chronicles” was #4 in eBooks thanks to the efforts of Daniel’s publicist.

Sunbury Press experienced its best January yet, after seeing sales decline slightly in 2012 versus 2011, as eBooks cannibalized print.  Sales for January 2013 were up 21% over the prior year, with growth in print leading growth in eBooks for the first time in years. “We have seen an increase in print sales to independent bookstores,” said publisher Lawrence Knorr. “We’ve had a lot of regional interest in many of our titles, and the media seems to be more open to reporting on smaller presses. Conversely, from our perspective, it appears eBook sales are beginning to level.  Regardless of which way the market goes from here, we are ready.”

Darla Henry’s “The 3-5-7 Model – A Practice Approach to Permanency,” detailing her system for dealing with grief, nabbed #5 in print due to wholesale orders to conferences.

Robert Broomall’s “Murder in the 7th Cavalary,” a mystery based in General Custer’s camp, continued to sell well in eBook format, ranking 6th.

Sue Dahlgren Daigneault’s biography about her famous father, WW2 hero Ed Dahlgren, grabbed 8th in print and 9th in eBooks thanks to author events.

‘The People’s Medium,’ Michele Livingston, rejoined to the top 10 eBooks, slotting in at #8 thanks to author events.

Ann Elia Stewart’s “Twice a Child,” a novel recounting her father’s Lewy Body Dimentia, ranked 9th in print.

Bob Ford’s “Beagle Tales,” the first volume in his popular series, finished the eBook top 10, thanks to author appearances.

“There is Something About Rough & Ready: A History of the Village at the Heart of the Mahantongo Valley” rounded out the print top 10, as regional sales continued to be brisk.

Boca Raton police seek abducted child in John Scanlan’s debut novel “Of Guilt and Innocence”

The abduction of five-year-old Ashley Wooten from her own front yard rattles everyone in the quiet, upscale community of Boca Raton to their core, but no one more so than the little girl’s father, Tom Wooten.
