What time is it? I reach up to feel the jagged edge of the old lead-ridden windowpane just above my head. A chilly autumn whisper of a breeze dances across my skin and I glance at my watch. Its weight becomes apparent as my arm hangs loosely above me. The glow of the setting sun plays on its face—an iridescent, oceanic wave of color, frozen behind the dial. Tick…tick tick…tick….tick.

As I count the seconds passing, I begin to hear my beating heart in rhythm, almost three beats per second. The bursts of blood rushing to my head with each passing second feel like hammers slamming on steel. My breathing begins to accelerate. My chest feels heavy. I notice my body moving.

Collision. Stripped. Bare. I can’t seem to catch my breath. The pressure rises from between my core up to my throat and it chokes me.

I feel myself slipping. I float up and watch myself quietly. My vision clears and my eyes find the sunglow through the birch trees just outside the window. Brilliant shades of flame dance around wildly and entice me. Its branches spread like mine, frozen open, for anyone to climb. I feel like I’ve been here forever.

Tim. I even hate his name.

He said I’m too old to not have done this already. He said he could help me with it—that it isn’t a big deal. He could show me what it felt like, just to get it out of the way. “You’re so beautiful,” he wrote on a piece of paper. He can mouth the words, but he can’t speak. We communicated on paper until I learned how to fingerspell. I’ll be a martyr, a savior. People will look up to me. I tried to convince myself that there’s no way I was taken unwillingly because he can’t hear. He’s still a man. No one will believe me. After all, I’d met him twice before. So it meant that I knew him, right? He isn’t technically a stranger. Maybe he could be my boyfriend—except that I’m not attracted to him. Maybe I could fake it. Maybe it could grow over time.

“You’re weird like me,” he wrote. “You’ll never do any better.” Maybe he’s right. I told him I wasn’t interested. He said that it was okay, I didn’t have to be his girlfriend—we’d just get this out of the way really quickly and I could decide later.

I know I didn’t say yes, but maybe I didn’t communicate the word no clear enough. Maybe I’ll never know. Maybe this is just the beginning.

About the Author
Keep It Blue is life as I know it. Whether directly or indirectly, the events and emotions in this novel have often mirrored my own. I grew up along the Oregon Coast and currently live in Portland, Oregon. When I’m not writing, I am working as a fine artist and musician, as well as a mother of two wild boys and as the wife of Benjamin–to whom I’ve been dynamically and passionately married to for more than a decade. By the ripe age of thirty, I’ve survived three heart surgeries, homelessness, and an ongoing battle managing my level one bipolar disorder. I am the embodiment of a truth that is stranger than fiction, and I believe in hope, comfort, and perfect love for imperfect people.

On display will be postcards from Hershey, Sand Beach, Union Deposit, Derry Church, Hockersville, Swatara Station, Hummelstown, Campbell(s)town, and Palmyra, as well as  Indian Echo Cave, Stoverdale, Brownstone Quarry, and Valley Glen Park. In addition, postcard printing blocks and uncut sheets of Hershey cards, showing the color-layered printing process, will be featured.

This drop-in event will run from 1pm to 4pm in the Community Room at the Hershey-Derry Township Historical Society, 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey, PA. (located near the outlets in Hershey)

Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free to historical society members and a $2 donation is requested of non-members.

“You’re being downsized,” Grayson Collingsworth said.

Revere Polk had just settled into the stuffed leather visitor’s chair in Collingsworth’s plush office on the second floor of the Daily Telegraph, three blocks off Market Square.

Rumors of layoffs were rampant in the newsroom. Revere—Rev to friend and foe alike―had rehearsed a dozen reactions and decided silence was the best strategy. He crossed one long leg over the other, cocked his head to the right, and considered Collingsworth as if he were sighting down the barrel of an assault rifle.

Down on the street, state workers scurried from the parking garages to their jobs in the halls of government. Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, cleaved to state government like a tick to a bloodhound.

The wood paneling of Collingsworth’s office gleamed in the sunlight peeking through the curtains. Footprints would linger on the plush pile until the next vacuuming. The editor’s big desk glowed with the patina of years of furniture polish.

Collingsworth lurked behind the desk, six-two, and 250 pounds—a collegiate linebacker going to seed in middle age. The trappings of power diminished him more than they built him up. Pockmarked and greasy-haired, he was a mutt misplaced at Westminster.

Younger by a decade and taller by a good two inches, Rev was a fit 210 pounds. He slouched in contemptuous nonchalance.

“Well, say something,” Collingsworth barked.

Point for the home team, Rev thought. “So the profit margin’s down to what, nine percent? Most businesses these days would kill for those numbers. Grocery stores get by on 2 percent … or less.”

Collingsworth’s wince told Rev that his analysis was spot on.

“And your solution is to fire the experienced staff, and leave the news gathering to young pups who can’t find their asses with both hands.”

“It’s the economy, Rev. You know that as well as I do.”

The editor’s gruff voice couldn’t obscure the cheap whine he’d brought to this party.

“Christ, Gray, Jillian what’s-her-name, your new city hall reporter, misspelled the mayor’s name in the lead of today’s A-1 story on the incinerator bond debacle and the dumb newbies on the copy desk didn’t catch it until the suburban edition―and then only because I told them. Is that what this business is coming to?”

“Don’t you want to hear the terms?” Collingsworth asked.

Rev’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Sure, Gray. Why don’t you tell me how magnanimous you’re going to be?”

“We’re prepared to offer you a year’s salary and medical benefits … as long as you sign a one-year non-compete.”

“I suppose you’re offering Sophie the same deal?”

Collingsworth leaned back in his chair and made a tent of his fingertips. “Actually, we’ve asked Sophie to stay on. We can’t empty the stable of all our investigative reporters.”

About the Author
Wade Fowler is a career journalist with more than thirty years of experience with daily and weekly newspapers. He was a copy editor, feature writer and beat reporter for The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, PA, for 10 years before leaving to become editor of the Perry County Times in New Bloomfield.

He has won Keystone Press Awards for investigative reporting, feature series writing, and headline writing and is a former president of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors.

Fowler is a native of North Carolina, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a graduate of Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C.

He and his wife, Sharon, live in New Cumberland, PA. They have three children and two grandchildren.

Palmiry, Poland – September 8, 1939
THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD TADZIO STOOD IN THE FRONT HALLWAY of the family’s summerhouse and watched his father walk out the door. “Why do you have to leave now, Father?” he shouted at him. “We need you. The war…” he broke off.

Tadzio’s father turned around. “I’m sorry I haven’t spent much time with you this past year. Until today, I never really understood how important your Scouting activities were. Now I need to leave on a special business trip, and I’m not sure when I’ll be back.”

Tadzio looked down and stared at a spot on the hardwood floor where the late morning sun leaked in through the open doorway.

“I can’t give you any details.” His father reached out and lifted Tadzio’s chin. “When I get back I’ll explain everything.” Catching Tadzio by surprise, his father pulled him into a close embrace. “I love you.” He then turned and left.

Tadzio longed to yell, “Of course you’re leaving. That’s what you always do. Why should today be any different?” He also wished he could run after his father, wrap his arms around his waist and shout, “No, don’t go Poppa. Don’t leave now, don’t ever leave us again!” Instead, Tadzio just stood with his hands at his sides and said nothing.

An hour earlier, Tadzio’s sixteen-year-old patrol leader, Andrzej, had driven Tadzio’s Scoutmaster and two other boys from Tadzio’s Scout troop to their family’s summer home. Without any explanation, Tadzio’s father and the Scoutmaster, Professor Handelsman, went into his father’s library where they spoke in hushed tones for almost thirty minutes. Tadzio quickly learned that the two Scouts who arrived with Andrzej and the professor had no idea why they were there, except that Professor Handelsman asked them to come.

Now the professor joined Tadzio’s family out on the white-columned porch as the family watched their father leave. Tadzio’s mother held little four-year-old Henio’s hand. Tadzio’s older sister, Magdalena, sniffled and wiped her tears with her embroidered handkerchief.

Tadzio’s father walked across the yard and into the barn. He returned a moment later dragging two heavy suitcases. After hoisting them into the back seat of Andrzej’s black Fiat 518, he slid in next to the patrol leader on the passenger’s side. Andrzej revved the car’s engine, throwing out the heady, nauseous stench of petrol. Seconds later he pulled out of the gravel driveway and onto the forest-lined road.

“Andrzej will return in about an hour,” the professor explained. “Tadzio and Magdalena, I’d like you and the other Scouts to meet me in the library when he returns. I will tell you what you need to know at that time.”

Tadzio opened his mouth, about to say, “Tell us now,” but the professor’s pressed lips kept Tadzio silent. As he usually did when frustrated or depressed, Tadzio went to the ebony Böesendorfer grand piano in the far corner of the parlor and practiced his scherzo. The other Scouts all went their separate ways until Andrzej returned from his mysterious errand.

Ted Minnis scurried up the creaky steps to the marina manager’s office with a mission. He would want an ironclad guarantee from Oscar Coleman the marina boss that he would be granted exclusive privileges in the event of the annual bottleneck debacle that occurred every Fourth of July in the Monnachawee Bay. His main objective was to secure the prime vantage point off the coast of Seaside, Maryland to view the fireworks display from the deck of his Sea Ray 440 with his mistress and his friends. He did not want to suffer the embarrassment of promising something to his friends that he could not deliver. Everything had to be perfect. Ever the opportunist, the forty-two year old successful hospital supply sales manager had even harangued the boatyard staff to ensure his craft, The Rough Rider, would not be bottled up at the Bay Marina as had happened in the past. After all this was the Fourth of July and as custom would have it, all boat owners desired to have the same prime viewing spot for the 9:20 PM display.

Minnis’s tantrums were notorious and his reputation definitely preceded him. Unknown to Minnis was that Coleman was not on duty this morning. Instead his assistant Earl Carruthers was in charge. Carruthers had seen these self-important types before and was not going to be intimidated. He had a unique way that he had tweaked and perfected through the years. Call it Prozac induced maturity, but basically it was indifference. If somebody like Minnis tried to provoke him coarsely with an urgent request, ‘Old Earl’ would smile benignly and grant the party their wish. Earl adopted a new mantra—If it isn’t important for me to remember then fuck them and the Ferrari they rode in on! It beat heated confrontations and the lawsuits that ensued from his bygone temper laced confrontations over trivial matters. But most important, his sixty-eight year old heart couldn’t stand such infantile altercations. Carruthers gave the jerk his way although the traffic would be light at the time that Minnis requested.

Arriving the next day in a 1990 BMW 325i convertible, Minnis and his bimbo du jour pulled sharply into a gravel parking space at the front of the marina. The black canvas top emerged from the trunk and engulfed the interior of the glossy white coupe while the windows rose electrically to seal the auto. The CD player was abruptly turned off in the middle of Bob Marley’s, “We Jammin.” The passenger door swung open delicately to reveal two perfectly manicured Gucci sandaled feet and a pair of long shapely legs. The heat and humidity coupled with the lack of any semblance of a breeze they had experienced in their ride to the marina dampened their faces. Minnis glanced at his diamond-laced Rolex and shook his head incredulously.

“Three forty-five! I told them three forty-five! Where the hell are they?”

“ They’ll be here, Ted. Relax!” his date consoled.

Octavia Bledsoe comforted the anxious sales manager by clutching his sun-burned forearm. A former Miss Baltimore runner-up, Miss Bledsoe was a stunning and accomplished African-American woman who worked as an assistant administrator at Baltimore General Hospital. Her appearance complimented her drug rehabilitated acquaintance to say the least. Minnis stood 5 foot 6 and Miss Bledsoe towered above her mate at 6 foot 1. On this day she was clad in short green khaki shorts and a maroon pullover. Her neck was adorned by a gold necklace with a solid gold heart pendant which hung above her ample cleavage. The necklace of course was a gift from her diminutive wife-cheating beau. Her black hair was styled long but on this day slicked back and kept from being swept in her face by a Baltimore Orioles baseball cap.

Minnis, bathed in British Sterling cologne and bath products, swatted away the increasing swarm of various flying insects attracted to his manly scent. At forty two years old, Minnis’s well-coiffed curly receding brown hair, tanned body, and gaudy golden chain around his chest hair encroaching neck were testament that he was still a player in his mind. Like a knight preparing for battle, Minnis would preen his looks to perfection in front of a mirror prior to exiting his abode each morning for work or play but not before uttering his conceited anticipation of better looks for tomorrow to his reflection in the vanity mirror.

Minnis shuffled to the rear of his car to retrieve the two blue and white coolers which were in the trunk. The heavier of the two fell from his smallish hands and landed with a crash on the gravel lot. He cursed silently and opened it. To his satisfaction the Chivas Regal, Grey Goose, Jim Beam and the Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay were intact. He had used an old beach towel to cushion the spirits in the cooler while in transit along with plastic cups, plastic plates and plastic cutlery purchased at a gasoline station convenience store with his platinum credit card. The other cooler contained cold fried chicken, chilled steamed shrimp, potato salad and rolls along with ice he bought at a grocery store that morning before he picked up Miss Bledsoe.…

Queen Esther’s spirit reigns again — Remsen’s “Visions of Teaoga” #1 — Sunbury Press bestsellers

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Sunbury Press has released the bestsellers list for February, 2015. Jim Remsen’s Visions of Teaoga was #1, followed by Tess Rutjen’s newly released Stalked by a Demon.. The Wolf of Britanna Part I by Jess Steven Hughes claimed the third spot.

Sunbury Press had its best February ever, up nearly 50% from last year, and 3.5% from January on a sales-per-day basis.Year-to-date sales are more than double last year. Hardcover books continue to outpace eBooks, which continue to slide. Trade paperbacks remain steady.

Jim Remsen’s Visions of Teaoga grabbed the top spot due to author appearances in eastern Pennsylvania. Tess Rutjen’s Stalked by a Demon bolted to #2 out of the gate due to author activities. Jess Steven Hughes has been drumming up interest in the Northwest with his hat trick of historical novels, newly released The Wolf of Britannia Part I (#3) and Part II (#7) along with the bestselling The Sign of the Eagle (#27). Alan Mindell’s baseball love story, The Closer, roared back to #4 thanks to author activities in the San Diego area. Head Over Wheels, the medical memoir by Ken Mercurio, has been buttressed at #5 by a busy booksigning schedule. Chris Pisano and Brian Koscienski debuted at #6 with their dark fantasy novel The Devil’s Grasp, due to prep for convention appearances. Bestselling author Charles Godfrey of Final Charge fame, has produced a sequel The Death Machine that has parked at #8 thanks to support from fans.  J M West’s Courting Doubt and Darkness reached #9 andDying for Vengeance #23 thanks to her First Friday appearance at the Sunbury Press Store and her TV interview on Good Day PA. The late Beth Lancione’s pair of Solomon Screech Owl childrens books slipped from the top spots last month to #10 & #11 respectively. Susan Kiskis rejoined the list at #12 with her metaphysical memoir Born Fire Dragon, helped by her appearance planning. Husband and wife team Robin and Deborah (Marks) McClellan kicked off their visionary fiction novel OneWay at lucky #13 thanks to support from friends and family. Marie Sontag’s presales of Rising Hope helped it rise to #14, while her appearances drove The Bronze Dagger back onto the chart at #20. Joe Fair’s Vietnam War memoir Call Sign Dracula slipped to #15, still garnering interest from veterans. John Cressler’sShadows in the Shining City held at #16 as the author makes his rounds in the Atlanta area. Terry Ray’s Worldwide Invasion of the Orange Orbs returned to the rankings at #17 due to steady sales from MUFON’s bookstore. Renee des Lauriers dystopian YA novel The Oxygen Factory took #18 as the author prepped for appearances. Jesus the Phoenician, by Lebanese author Karim el Koussa, was #19 due to export orders. Anthony Julian’s popular Pit Bulls book held on at #21 due to online interest. Paul Argentini’s A Treatise: The Art of Casting a Fly was resurrected as a hardcover edition, stepping out at #22. Bob Ford’s Beagle Tales 4 returned to the chart at #24 due to author events. William Lemanski’s memoir Adventures in Distant and Remote Places found #25 as the author promoted the book in Tuxedo Park, NY. Mike Campbell’s classic Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last remained on the list at #26 due to continued interest in the topic. John L. Moore’s latest in his popular Frontier Pennsylvania Series, Forts, Forests and Flintlocks grabbed #28 thanks to local interest. Keith Rommel’s The Cursed Man made the chart due to his recent appearance in Florida and interest in the movie production. Jolene Busher’s historical tale about the Eckley Miners Village returned to the rankings due to orders from that venue.
